Akai EWI1000 (First-Generation Controller) — Signed by Michael Brecker / Provenance: Montreal Jazz Festival 2001
Overview
Model: Akai EWI1000 controller only (no sound module).
Condition: Overall good; strap hook has rust from a past strap modification.
Special Value: Genuine “Mike Brecker” autograph sealed under protective film since 2001; still clear and intact today.
Rarity & Provenance
“To my knowledge after extensive research, this is the only Akai EWI ever held and signed by Michael Brecker. No other examples have surfaced in autograph collections, auction archives, or collector networks. That rarity adds powerful uniqueness and historical weight to this instrument.”
“This is not a generic EWI1000. It is the specific instrument Michael Brecker held and signed for me in July 2001 at the Montreal Jazz Festival; he even ‘air-played’ it for several minutes before signing. The signature has been preserved under film since that night.”
Personal Story
At the Montreal Jazz Festival in July 2001, I brought this EWI1000 to Michael. He smiled and said, “I haven’t seen one of these early ones in a long time.” Then he “air-played” it for several minutes, unplugged—half joking, half as if he were revisiting the feel of an old companion. After that, he signed “Mike Brecker” on the body. That same night, I sealed the autograph with clear protective film, and ever since, the EWI has been untouched and preserved as a collector’s piece.
For me—and for many fans—owning a Brecker-signed first-generation EWI is like owning a Fender Stratocaster signed by Jimi Hendrix. It’s not just an instrument; it’s a piece of music history.
(The original concert ticket from that night will be shown in the photos as proof of time and place. The ticket itself is not part of this sale but can be discussed separately with the winning bidder.)
Historical Context
The EWI1000 was Akai’s first commercial wind controller (typically paired with the EWV2000 analog module).
Michael Brecker was the pioneer who brought the EWI to the world, most famously in Steps Ahead “In a Sentimental Mood” (Tokyo, 1986), and later across albums like Return of the Brecker Brothers and Out of the Loop.
