エヴァ・ガードナー（Ava Lavinia Gardner、1922年12月24日 - 1990年1月25日[1]）は、アメリカ合衆国ノースカロライナ州出身の女優[2]。アメリカ映画協会（AFI）が1999年6月に選出したアメリカの「最も偉大なる女優50名」では第25位であった。

貧しい農家の7人兄弟の末っ子としてノースカロライナ州ジョンストン郡グラブタウン (en) に生まれる。母親のモリーはバプティスト派のスコットランド系アイルランド人とイングランド人の混血、父親はカトリック派のアイルランド系アメリカ人とタスカローラ族・インディアンの混血だった[3][4][5]。
デビュー

シナトラとの再婚
ティーン向けの歌手から出発し、幼なじみのナンシーと結婚して3児の父になっていたシナトラは、当時歌手として低迷し、俳優としてもくすぶっていた。エヴァと交際するようになっても、カトリックである上にマフィアの娘でもあるシナトラの妻が離婚を承諾せず、いらだったエヴァは前夫アーティー・ショーに会ったりしていた。そのことに怒ったシナトラが、エヴァと電話で会話中に、彼女に聞こえるようにピストルを壁に向けて発射するという事件を起こした[要出典]。

She entered the film industry after a photograph taken by her brother-in-law—a professional photographer—caught the attention of studio executives. Although she made her debut, her strong Southern accent hindered her progress; for years, she lacked a major hit and her career stagnated, with most of her work consisting of pin-up photography.
Standing nearly 170 centimeters tall and possessing exotic features, she was an unconventional presence in a Hollywood that favored blonde actresses. Rather than playing standard roles, she was frequently cast as a Gypsy or a Black woman [Note 1]. She quickly distinguished herself as an actress ideally suited for *femme fatale* roles.

Although she conceived her first child with Artie, she had an abortion after the president of her film studio remarked that "an actress with a child cannot become a star"—a decision that dismayed Artie, who lamented, "To think you'd listen to the studio head rather than your husband!" [Citation needed]. She was also known for her relationships with the tycoon Howard Hughes and the Dominican diplomat and notorious playboy Porfirio Rubirosa.
**Popularity**
Her career turning point came with the 1951 musical *Show Boat*; she made a powerful impression and achieved a major breakthrough. She subsequently appeared in popular films such as *Mogambo*, *The Barefoot Contessa*, and *On the Beach*. Her relationship with Frank Sinatra—whom she would later marry—was the subject of scandal from the very beginning.
**Remarriage to Sinatra**
Sinatra, who had started as a teen idol and was a father of three with his childhood sweetheart Nancy, was experiencing a slump in his singing career and struggling to gain traction as an actor at the time. Even after he began seeing Ava, his wife—a devout Catholic and the daughter of a Mafia figure—refused to grant a divorce; frustrated by this, Ava would sometimes meet up with her ex-husband, Artie Shaw. Enraged by this, Sinatra once fired a pistol at a wall while speaking to Ava on the phone, ensuring she could hear the gunshot [Citation needed].
They married in November 1951 [6], but divorced in 1957; the split was caused by Sinatra's rekindled womanizing habits, which resurfaced alongside his career resurgence following his appearance in the 1953 film *From Here to Eternity*.
**Later Years**
As trends shifted in the 1960s, her popularity waned, though she still appeared in major productions such as *55 Days at Peking* and *The Bible: In the Beginning...*. She gradually moved away from Hollywood films and appeared increasingly in international productions. After divorcing Sinatra, she became involved with a Spanish bullfighter and relocated to Spain.
